about

Welcome!

My name is Kara Fairfield. I'm a follower of Jesus Christ. I'm also a cat lady, I hate the color yellow, and I really like leather booties and daytime moons. I live in a little city in southwest Florida in a big orange house with two lazy cats and a dog who's afraid of her own shadow. I use this space mostly to ramble about the importance of alphabetizing your DVDs and about drinking copious amounts of Dr. Pepper and about other deeply important things that make up a beautiful life. I use this blog to chronicle the passing of time in this sunny, humid beach town, and I use it to keep in touch with friends and family scattered all over the world. I use it to spread God's word. I can commonly be found shopping online for things that I really don't actually need or marathoning lame romantic comedies.

And now, here are the answers to some frequently asked questions...

Why is your blog called Uma June?
-I had originally planned on my blog being self-titled, but my name really doesn't have the right ring to it. It has some kind of ring, but not the kind I want. And since this blog mostly features senseless babbling, I couldn't think of any content-related URLs. So, my sister and I each listed girls' names that we thought were pretty, and we took one name from her list and one from mine. That's the very unsentimental story of how "Uma June" came to be.

Why do you blog?
-I have been a faithful reader of several blogs for many, many years. One day I decided I wanted to be a bigger part of the blogging community. I started this blog in March of 2013, but it's sat here growing old and collecting dust all on its own for almost two and a half years. When I moved back to Florida from Ohio, I finally sat down with real, solid intentions to show this space some love. I wrote more about this right here.

What kind of camera do you use?
-I use a Canon Rebel T5. Her name is Nessa and I love her dearly. I've had her for less than a year, and she's the first DSLR I've ever owned. Before Nessa, I used a horrible little red point-and-shoot that belongs to my sister. Using it made me want to punch myself in the face.

Do you do custom totes/cards/etc.?
-Absolutely! If you have an inquiry for, say, a custom tote bag, you can email me at ketfairfield@gmail.com. We’ll discuss what it is that you’d like to order, and I’ll post a custom listing in the shop, just for you.

Is Florida weather as nice as everyone says it is?
-Florida weather is awful. The temperature is always about twenty degrees hotter than I'd like it to be, and the humidity is always so high that the air feels heavy and sticky and almost thick. I love the rain, but Florida rain brings worms out of the dirt and they try to get into your house, and after the storm you're guaranteed to find your car covered in wet pine needles. You’ll get Palmetto bugs and centipedes and wolf spiders in your house, too, trying to escape the heat, I think. (I'm probably making the weather seem a lot worse than it actually is. Most of the time it's really lovely here.)

What kind of dog is Theena?
-She's a potcake. Yes, the actual name of the breed is potcake. The breed comes from the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Bahamas. According to Wikipedia, the name comes from "the congealed rice and pea mixture that local residents traditionally fed dogs."

A disclaimer. Please bear in mind, friends, that this blog is a place for me to document the lovely little moments in my life. I'll delete any negative or hurtful comments.
